Every day at Disability Engagement Services, powerful stories unfold. Moments of achievement, of teamwork and growth that speak so much louder than any statistic ever could. But unless those stories are captured and shared, they risk staying hidden within our walls.
That's why photography and storytelling matter so much at DES. Whilst we love to share what happens behind the scenes, the main focus of our photos and stories are to shine a light on ability, creativity, and the community we've built. They help us to celebrate the people at the heart of our mission, and to share their journeys with the wider world.
The Power of Images
A single photograph can capture what words often struggle to describe. The pride on someone's face as they complete a project, the focus in their eyes as they learn a new skill, or the laughter shared between colleagues... These are the moments that show inclusion in action.
At DES, photography isn't about staged pictures or posed smiles. It's about authenticity. It's about showing the real people behind the work: their determination, creativity, and joy. Whether it's in Tarka Yard's Design & Media department, the Joinery, or during community events, images help us share the spirit of what's happening here.
Through photography, we give others the chance to see what we see every day. A place where ability is celebrated, and where small, ordinary moments become extraordinary when you look closely enough.

Storytelling Beyond the Lens
Of course, a photograph is only part of the story. At DES, we pair images with words to bring those moments to life; whether it's through blog posts, social media updates, or printed materials like our cataglogues. Storytelling gives context: it explains not only what is happening in an image, but why it matters.
When we share the journey behind a finished planter box, or the confidence gained from completing a design project, we're showing more than just products or activities. We're telling the story of growth, resilience, and inclusion. These narratives invite our wider community to connect with the people at the heart of DES, and to understand the importance of the work being done here.
In this way, storytelling becomes a bridge - turning everyday moments into messages that shift perceptions and highlight the value of inclusion.
Why It Matters
For DES, photography and storytelling are about creating change as much as they are about communication. By showing the world what inclusion looks like in practice, we can challenge stereotypes and break down barriers. We can highlight ability instead of limitation, and community instead of isolation.
These stories also help supported employees feel seen and celebrated. When their work and achievements are shared, it builds pride and confidence. It shows that their contributions matter, not only within Tarka Yard, but to the wider community too.
And for employees, partners, and supporters, these stories are a reminder of what's possible when people are given the right opportunities. They illustrate the impact of inclusion in a way that's relatable and inspiring.

Capturing Inclusion
Here at DES, each and every photo and story is a celebration of ability. Together, they create a picture of what true inclusion looks like. It's not abstract ideas. It's real people. Real achievements. People and achievements that make a real community.
By capturing these moments and sharing them, we hope to be able to inspire others and to spark conversations. Our goal is to show that inclusion is possible, yes, but also powerful.
