Welcome to this special spotlight feature on our blog - today, we are thrilled to introduce Mark, a support worker known for his incredible artwork and dedication to his role.

From IT Engineer to Support Worker: Finding Purpose at DES

After 16 years in the world of IT, Mark found himself yearning for something more. Despite the security and financial stability his career afforded him, Mark found his soul just wasn't in it. He was wrestling with an inner turmoil that many experience but few act upon. The universe conspired in his favour when his sister Jess, who was already a part of the vibrant DES family, mentioned an opportunity that seemed tailor-made for Mark.

His decision to join DES, however, was not without sacrifices. Accepting this role meant taking a considerable pay cut, something not everyone is willing to do. But Mark was motivated by something far greater than financial gain; he was driven by the pursuit of happiness and a desire to make a meaningful impact. That impact is certainly felt, as Mark has become an integral part of our community.

Outside the Workplace: Serial Hobbyist & Family Man

Mark's life outside DES is as rich and multifaceted as his role at work. An avid gamer and model-making enthusiast, he also enjoys outdoor activities like fishing and golf. Music has a special place in his life, serving both as a source of relaxation and an emotional outlet.

The image is a meticulously detailed miniature diorama that depicts a charming rustic scene. A small cottage with a textured roof suggests an old, weathered structure. There is a clothesline in front of the cottage with tiny clothes pinned to it, adding a quaint human touch to the scene. Surrounding the house is a verdant landscape of moss and miniature plants, creating an idyllic setting. The background is blurred, focusing the viewer's attention on the intricate details of the cottage and its immediate environment.

Mark credits his father as his greatest inspiration in life and speaks fondly of their shared interests. "He was a creative spirit, I always wanted to make him proud."

But what truly sets Mark apart is how his personal values seamlessly align with the ethos of DES. Mark lives by a strong moral code that prioritises empathy, respect, and treating everyone as equals, regardless of their background. "I don't see disability, I see the person. I believe in treating everyone with the same level of respect," he shares. This isn't just lip service, it's the driving force that enables him to forge meaningful relationships with both support staff and supported employees.

A Day in the Life: From Coffee to Collaboration

As Mark says, "First things first - a big cup of coffee to kickstart the day." This burst of caffeine is followed by a check-in with each team member, a practice that sets the tone for the day. Mornings at DES are more than just a preamble to the workday; they begin with stimulating brain teasers to activate cognitive processes and fuel positive energy.

Mark is also excited about the forthcoming additions to the DES routine, which include hands-on workshops in pyrography, 3D printing, and using the soon-to-arrive kiln. These enriching experiences are designed to tap into the creative potential of each supported employee, fostering a sense of achievement and collective pride.

Building Trust and Overcoming Challenges: Mark's Philosophy

The image shows a focused individual, wearing a grey hoodie and a black cap, overseeing another person who is intently working on a piece of wood. The person working is using a marker to draw or write on the wood, and is wearing a blue hoodie and a striped beanie. The environment suggests a workshop setting, with tools and work materials present, indicative of a hands-on learning or craft session.

Every day presents its own set of challenges and learning opportunities. Navigating the complex emotional landscapes of each individual at DES requires a unique skill set - one that Mark seems to possess inherently. "Sometimes you've got to read between the lines," he explains, emphasising the importance of looking beyond surface-level behaviours to understand underlying emotions.

Building trust is not an overnight feat. It's a continuous process that involves both the heart and the mind. By opening channels of communication and offering a non-judgmental ear, Mark ensures that DES remains a sanctuary of trust, respect and mutual understanding.

The DES Difference: An Inside Look

"At DES, it's not just about the job, it's about the people," Mark says. The organisation stands out in his experience for the level of genuine care and attention devoted to staff and supported employees alike. Mark is particularly appreciative of the mindfulness and anxiety therapy programs led by Jane, saying, "It creates a safety net here that I haven't experienced elsewhere."

The culture at DES also enhances Mark's work, resonating with his personal values of compassion and empathy. The organisational ethos of inclusivity and individual-focussed support goes beyond policy manuals; it's palpable in every corner of our site.

Nuggets of Wisdom: Tasty Tips for Aspiring Support Workers

When asked what qualities are key for a prospective support worker, Mark is quick to note that "patience, empathy, and sympathy" top the list. But he has a straightforward, and perhaps surprising, fundamental guideline: "Just be a nice person. Our supported employees are smart; they'll know if you're not genuine, and both staff and supported employees value authenticity."

In addition to these traits, Mark has more practical advice for newcomers: "Don't rush in. Take your time to get to know everyone, not just as a group but as individuals. Each person has their own way of communicating, their own needs and their own gifts." You're not just entering a job at DES, you're becoming part of a community.

Looking Ahead: Mark's Vision for DES

Mark is not one to rest on his laurels. His vision for the future of DES is ambitious yet deeply personal. He dreams of seeing a fully successful art and media department at DES, further enhancing the creative atmosphere and the many services offered. In the short term, he's enthusiastic about the possibility of incorporating resin art into the workspace. This creative outlet, he believes, could serve as a unified project, blending together different art forms like pyrography and laser engraving. This not only provides a new avenue for artistic expression but also serves as a metaphor for what DES is all about: different pieces coming together to create something beautiful and functional.

The image displays a laptop screen with a 3D modelling software interface open, showing the design of a cylindrical object with a textured surface. The perspective is over the shoulder of an individual, who is focusing intently on the screen, presumably working on the 3D model. The person is wearing a dark blue shirt and a black cap, indicative of a focused work or educational environment.

The overarching goal for Mark is to help more supported employees transition into full-time work. He sees this as the ultimate validation of DES's effectiveness and a personal success that goes beyond job satisfaction. It's clear that Mark envisions DES not just as a stepping stone but as a launchpad, propelling supported employees into new opportunities and brighter futures.

It's obvious to us at DES that Mark embodies the values and aspirations that make DES a unique and inspiring place to be. The vision he holds for the future is more than just a pipe dream; it's a practical blueprint for continued growth, inclusivity, and holistic development for all involved.
